Every kingdom has two names: the one it uses and the one its neighbours use

Germany calls itself Deutschland. The French call it Allemagne, after a tribal confederation that stopped existing 1,500 years ago. The Finns call it Saksa, after a different tribe entirely. Three names, three completely different stories, one country β€” and not one of them was chosen by a committee looking for something that sounded impressive.

This is the single most useful thing to steal for a fantasy kingdom, and it is almost never done. A kingdom that only has an official name feels like a location on a map. A kingdom that has an official name and a name its rivals use feels like a place with history and enemies. You get both for the price of about thirty seconds of thought.

The endonym: what the kingdom calls itself

Grand, formal, and almost always a claim. Official names are propaganda with a flag on top β€” they assert a bloodline, a mandate, or a permanence the kingdom may not actually have. These read as composed rather than grown, and that stiffness is correct.

Pool-verified β€” drawn from the live pool this page’s generator uses:

Eldoria · Verenthia · Luminaris · Celestara · Vardunor · Sunfire Dominion · Ironclad Reach · Brightcrest · Skyhaven · Emberhold

The exonym: what everyone else calls it

Blunt, geographic, and frequently rude. Neighbours name a place after the thing they notice about it β€” the weather, the terrain, the smell, the last war. Exonyms are shorter than endonyms and stress the first syllable, because they are things people say often and quickly.

Pool-verified, and notice how differently these land next to the list above:

Frostvale · Ashenridge · Gloomspire · Duskmire · Shadowfen · Glacierfall · Crimsonvale · Wyrmwood · Mystvale · Thornwyn · Nythralis · Drakkenmoor · Silvershade · Stormwatch · Valewind

Pair one from each list and you have a hundred years of politics in two words. Luminaris, which its western neighbours have called Ashenridge ever since the fires. Celestara, known throughout the southern ports as Duskmire, a name its own ambassadors will not repeat. The gap between the two names is the story.

The suffix sets the scale, and readers already know the code

Suffixes carry size information that most people read without noticing. Use them deliberately and your map becomes legible at a glance; use them at random and every place feels the same size.

-vale, -fen, -mire, -dell: one valley, one marsh. A day’s ride across. These are places, not powers.

-hold, -watch, -crest, -spire: a fortified single site and the land it can see. A garrison, a lord, and a reason the garrison is there.

-ridge, -moor, -wood, -haven: a region defined by its terrain, usually with no single ruler and a long habit of ignoring whoever claims it.

-reach, -mark, -march: frontier territory. The name admits the kingdom stops somewhere and that something is on the other side.

Dominion, Imperium, Ascendancy: multiple peoples under one crown, at least one of whom did not agree to it.

A quick sanity check before you commit: say the name, then say how many days it takes to ride across it. If those two things disagree, change the suffix, not the root. For settlements below kingdom scale the village name generator and castle name generator stay in the right register, and for everything above it there is the empire name generator.

Three mistakes worth avoiding

Naming every kingdom in the same register. If all six kingdoms on your map are three-syllable Latinate abstractions, none of them reads as foreign to the others. Mix endonym-style and exonym-style names across the map so cultures sound like they came from different places.

Front-loading the adjective. Grand, Eternal, Holy and Undying age badly on a map and worse in dialogue. Let a title do that work when a herald says it aloud, and keep the map name plain.

Naming the kingdom before you know its terrain. Kingdom names are overwhelmingly geographic in origin. Decide whether it is a coast, a basin, a plateau or a chain of islands first β€” the name will then suggest itself, and it will be a name that could not belong to anywhere else.

Using the pool as a list, not a slot machine

Every generator here publishes its pool as a readable list on the page, which matters most for kingdoms. You are rarely naming one β€” you are naming five or six that have to sound like they share a continent and still be told apart. Scan the pool, pull the six that share a sound, assign them, and you have a coherent political map in one pass instead of thirty rerolls.

Once the kingdoms are named, the kingdom name generator covers the smaller realms between them, the fantasy world name generator handles the continent they all sit on, and the locations index has everything below that.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a fantasy kingdom name be?

One to four syllables. Anything longer will be shortened by your players within one session, so pick the short form yourself and decide who uses the long one. Formal names can run long precisely because heralds and treaties are where they belong.

Should the kingdom be named after its ruler?

Occasionally, and it dates the place usefully β€” a kingdom named for a dynasty tells you roughly when it was founded and hints at what happens when that line ends. Just avoid doing it more than once per map, or every realm starts sounding like a family business.

Can I use these names in a published work?

Yes. Everything this generator produces is free for personal and commercial use, including published novels, commercial games and monetised streams. No account, no email signup, no attribution required.

What is the difference between this and the kingdom name generator?

This pool leans toward high-fantasy realms with an evocative, story-forward sound. The kingdom name generator draws from a separate pool built for grounded, medieval-feeling realms. Different pools, different registers β€” worth opening both if a name is not landing.
