About LoreGenerator

LoreGenerator is a set of 77 fantasy name generators drawing on 2,529 names that a person wrote, read and checked. There is no account, no email step and no paid tier. This page explains how the site is actually made, because that is the only thing on an about page worth reading.

What a curated pool means here, and what it costs you

Most name generators build a name at the moment you press the button, usually by picking one syllable from column A and one from column B. That approach can produce an effectively infinite number of names, and it is why so many generated names are unusable: nobody ever read them.

This site works the other way round. Every generator draws from a finite, stored pool of names. The smallest pools hold 17 names, the largest hold 40, and the total across all 77 generators is 2,529. Each of those names exists as a row in a database because somebody put it there on purpose.

The honest trade-off: a finite pool repeats. Press a 20-name generator often enough and you will see all twenty. In exchange you get names that have been looked at, a pool that can be corrected when it is wrong, and generator pages that can tell you exactly what is inside — which is why most pages on this site list their entire pool and label it pool-verified.

An infinite generator cannot make that promise, because there is nothing to check.

Who makes this

LoreGenerator is run by one person. There is no team, no office and no investors, and if this page ever tells you otherwise, that page is wrong and should be reported to the address at the bottom.

That matters for a practical reason rather than a sentimental one: it sets the pace. Pools are written and audited in batches, corrections ship when they are found rather than on a schedule, and the site does not promise features it does not have. Everything on this site is a name generator and a written guide to naming. There are no map tools, no campaign managers, no exports, and no forum.

The written guides on the generator pages are the part that takes the time. Each one explains where a naming convention actually comes from — the Old Norse Dvergatal behind dwarf names, the Hebrew -el ending behind angelic names, the English byname tradition behind goblin names — and then sorts that generator’s real pool by the idea being described.

The rules this site holds itself to

Names are labelled. When a page lists names, it says whether they are the generator’s actual pool or examples written for the article. You should never have to guess whether the site is quoting itself.

No invented etymologies. If a page says a name element means something, that meaning comes from a real language or the page says plainly that the name is invented and means nothing. Three false etymologies were found and deleted from one page in August 2026.

No testimonials, real or otherwise. There are none on this site and there will not be any.

No email gates. No generator on this site will ever ask for an address before it gives you a name.

Names that belong to someone else get removed. Pools are audited against recognisable names from commercial fantasy settings, and anything too close is taken out — including names that are merely adjacent rather than identical.

How mistakes get fixed, with recent examples

A site built on stored pools has a specific failure mode: a pool can drift away from the page that describes it, and then the page starts lying without anybody editing a word. This has happened here, and the fixes are worth stating openly because they are the best evidence of how the site is maintained.

The changeling pool contained twenty angel names. A shapeshifter generator was producing celestial names — the opposite of what the page promised. It was reseeded in August 2026 with a two-register set: short true names, and deliberately forgettable worn names.

The dark elf pool contained no dark elf names. The page had for months advised readers to use particular sound patterns while its own generator ignored every one of them. The pool was rebuilt to match the advice the page was already giving.

The elf generators shared eighteen names between them. Five related pools had overlapping entries, so different generators returned the same name. All 109 slots across those pools are now distinct.

A false claim about subscription plans survived two fixes. An old FAQ answer described paid tiers that have never existed. It was corrected in one storage field and missed in another, then found again and removed. There is no paid tier.

The pattern is the same each time: the defect was found by auditing the site against itself rather than waiting for a complaint. If you find one that has been missed, the address below reaches the person who can fix it.

What the site is for

The intended reader is somebody who needs a name in the next thirty seconds — a game master whose players have just asked the innkeeper’s name, a writer who has stopped mid-paragraph, a worldbuilder filling in a map.

That is why every generator page puts the button near the top and the reading underneath it. Take the name and leave, or stay and find out why that kind of name sounds the way it does. Both are the intended use.

The guides are written for the second case. They are not padding, and they are not there to rank — they exist because the question “why does this sound right?” has a real answer for almost every naming convention in fantasy, and that answer usually makes it easier to invent your own names than to keep pressing a button.

Contact and corrections

Everything reaches the same inbox: info@loregenerator.com. There is no support desk and no ticket system, so a reply comes from the person who maintains the site.

Corrections are the most useful thing you can send. A wrong etymology, a name that belongs to a published setting, a pool that does not match its page, a broken link — all of it is fixable, and all of it gets fixed faster when somebody points at it.

Requests for new generators are welcome too, though the honest answer is that a new pool means writing and checking twenty to forty names, so it takes a while.

See also the contact page for the form, and the privacy policy for what happens to anything you send.

Questions about this site

Is LoreGenerator free?

Yes, entirely. There is no account, no email step, no paid tier and no limit on how many times you press a generator button. The site has never had a subscription plan, and any page that says otherwise is out of date and should be reported.

How many name generators are there?

Seventy-seven, drawing on 2,529 stored names. They cover races, character classes, creatures, locations, items, organisations and spells. The smallest pool holds 17 names and the largest holds 40.

Are the names generated on demand or written in advance?

Written in advance. Every generator draws from a finite stored pool rather than assembling a name at the moment you press the button. The trade-off is honest: a finite pool repeats, but in exchange every name has been read by a person and the pool can be corrected when it is wrong.

Who writes the names?

One person, working in batches. There is no team. Pools are written, then audited against the pages that describe them, then corrected when the two disagree — which has happened several times and is documented on this page.

Can I use the names commercially?

Yes. No attribution is required and individual names are not generally protectable. Pools are audited to remove names closely associated with existing commercial fantasy settings, and individual generator pages flag any name that carries a strong real-world or literary association.

How do I report a mistake?

Email info@loregenerator.com. Corrections are the most useful message the site receives — a wrong etymology, a name that belongs to a published setting, a pool that contradicts its own page, or a broken link. There is no ticket system; the reply comes from the person who maintains the site.
