What is actually in the ranger pool

The generator above draws from a finite, hand-checked pool of 38 ranger names. Every name printed on this page is pool-verified — it is one of the 38 the tool can hand you, not an example written to fill a page. Read all 38 at once and two things stand out.

There is not a single surname in the pool. Every entry is one name, standing alone. That is not an oversight, and it is the organising idea worth taking away from this page: a ranger is named for where they range, not for who they descend from. A ranger who has spent fifteen years on a border, in a wood, or above a treeline is known to the people who meet them by one word. The family name, if there ever was one, belongs to a village they left. Rogues get aliases, nobles get houses, rangers get a single name that travels.

The 38 are not from one language. They sit in three distinct sound-registers, and which register you pick tells your table where your ranger was raised before they answered to that one name.

The three registers in the pool

1. The sylvan register — long vowels, soft consonants (19 names)

These lean on ae, el, yn and ir, and they end on vowels or soft liquids far more often than on stops. Say Selyndra or Elyndor aloud and the name never closes hard. This is the register that reads as elf-adjacent whether or not your character is an elf, so it does double duty: it fits a wood elf ranger without argument, and it fits a human ranger who was fostered by one and kept the name.

2. The frontier register — hard consonants and stops (10 names)

Kethra · Bryndis · Thalor · Sarnen · Kaelen · Fendrel · Zyra · Mereth · Fenris · Zareth

Different mouth-shape entirely. Th, k, z and br do the work, and most of these land on a consonant. Two are worth being straight about: Bryndis is a real Icelandic given name, and Fenris is one letter from Fenrir, the wolf of Norse myth. If your setting is doing anything Norse-inflected, those two arrive with baggage — useful baggage, but pick them deliberately rather than by accident.

3. The common-tongue register — short and blunt (9 names)

One or two syllables, nothing decorative, and they survive being shouted across a clearing — which is the practical test a ranger name has to pass more often than a wizard’s does. Talon is an ordinary English word and will read as a chosen name, not a birth name, at most tables. Cerise is French for cherry; it is the odd one out in the pool and works best if your setting has a courtly culture the character has left behind.

Picking one in under a minute

Rangers get made mid-session more often than most classes, usually because someone’s character died in a wood and the replacement needs a name before the next encounter. A method that works:

1. Answer one question: where was this ranger before the wilderness? Fostered among elves or raised under a canopy → register 1. Raised on a hard border, a mountain, or a cold coast → register 2. Ordinary village, ordinary childhood, left anyway → register 3.
2. Generate until you get one from that register and say it out loud once. If you stumble on it, skip it — you will be saying this name every session for a year.
3. Do not add a surname. The single name is the characterisation. If your table insists on one, use a place rather than a family: Kethra of the Long Ash, not Kethra Blackwood.

If your ranger is not an elf

The pool skews sylvan, so a dwarf, half-orc or human ranger can look under-served at first glance. Two ways round it. Use registers 2 and 3, which are culture-neutral and carry no elvish signal at all — Thalor, Kethra, Orin and Valen all sit comfortably on a non-elf. Or take a name from a generator built for the race and treat this pool as the source of the by-name the wilderness gave them: a human named Alden who has answered to Fenris for a decade is a more interesting character sheet than either name alone.

What this generator does not do

It does not invent names on demand, and that is deliberate. The pool is finite and hand-checked, which means two things: you will eventually see a repeat if you sit and click, and you will never be handed a name lifted from a published setting that your group cannot legally or comfortably use. Nothing here is drawn from Faerûn, Golarion, Athas or any other rights-holder’s material. There is no sign-up, no email gate, and no limit on how many times you press generate.
