An autognome is named twice

Every other race on this site is named once, by parents, and spends a lifetime carrying it. An autognome is named by a maker — and then, if it lives long enough and thinks hard enough, it names itself again. That second naming is the whole character. It is the moment the machine decides it is somebody.

So autognome names come in two registers that should not sound alike, and the gap between them is where the roleplaying is.

The maker’s name

The first name is functional, because a rock gnome inventor who has built forty things is not being sentimental about the forty-first. Maker’s names read like workshop labels: a purpose, a model, a number, or a private joke that only makes sense to the person holding the screwdriver. Tickwright. Bellows-Three. Sprocket. Model Nine. Fidget.

The good ones tell you what the autognome was built for, which is often not what it is doing now. An autognome called Ledger was built to keep accounts and is currently holding a warhammer, and that single fact does more character work than a page of backstory. An autognome called Companion was built for a lonely inventor who has since died. Choose the maker’s name by asking what job the maker needed doing.

The numbering convention matters too. A number implies siblings. If your autognome is Seven, the table immediately wants to know what happened to One through Six, and whether any of them are still running.

The chosen name

The second name is the one the autognome picks after it works out that it can. These almost never sound mechanical, because the whole point of choosing is to choose something the maker would not have. Autognomes tend to take names from the things they noticed first and liked — a word overheard in a market, a colour, a person who was kind to them, a constellation seen through a workshop skylight.

This produces a characteristic mismatch that is very easy to play: a heavy brass construct with a soft, slightly impractical name. Bellows-Three, who now answers to Wren. Model Nine, who has decided her name is Tuesday, because that was the day she noticed she was awake.

The mismatch is the point. Do not smooth it out.

Gnome whimsy, machine precision

Autognomes sit at an unusual intersection: they are built by gnomes, so the naming inherits gnome whimsy, but they are machines, so it also inherits mechanical vocabulary. The generator above mixes both deliberately — you will see fizzles and wobbles next to sprockets and cranks, because that is exactly what a gnome workshop sounds like.

If you want to lean one way, it is worth doing it consciously. Push toward the mechanical (Cogspring, Gearsprocket, Tinkercrank) and the autognome reads as a tool that is beginning to wake up. Push toward the whimsical (Snickerdoodle, Dapplebloom, Gigglenook) and it reads as a person who happens to be made of brass. Both are valid; they are just different characters.

Naming an autognome for a specific table

A practical note for players: pick a name your party can say quickly in combat. Autognome names skew long and compound, and a four-syllable name gets abbreviated by the table within one session whether you like it or not. You may as well choose the abbreviation yourself. Wizzlewink Grindlebarrow will become Wizz by the second encounter — so decide now whether Wizz is a name you want.

For a game master naming several autognomes from the same workshop, give them a shared convention and one deliberate exception. If four of them are numbered and the fifth has a word for a name, the party will guess correctly that the fifth one is different, and they will be right.

What is an autognome?

An autognome is a small mechanical being built by gnome inventors — a construct in the shape of a gnome, animated and capable of thought. Because they are made rather than born, their naming works differently from every other ancestry: they receive a maker’s name first, and many later choose a second name for themselves.

Should my autognome use its maker’s name or a chosen one?

Both, if you want the most out of the character. Keep the maker’s name as the one on paperwork and in the mouths of anyone who knew the workshop, and use the chosen name for how the character introduces itself. The disagreement between the two is free characterisation.

Are autognome names the same as gnome names?

They overlap but are not identical. Autognome names inherit gnome whimsy because gnomes built them, but they also carry mechanical vocabulary — gears, springs, models and numbers — that ordinary gnome names do not. This generator mixes both registers on purpose.

Can I use these names in my own campaign or writing?

Yes, freely and with no attribution required, in commercial or non-commercial work. Recognisable trademarked character names are deliberately kept out of the name pools.
