A guild name is a sign hanging over a door, so the first question is what it is trying to communicate and to whom. Broadly there are three registers, and mixing them inside one city makes the setting feel incoherent.
Trade-formal names are what real medieval guilds used, and they are plainer than most fantasy settings expect: the Worshipful Company of Dyers, the Stonecutters’ Chapter, the Salt Factors. These sound authentic precisely because they are boring, and that contrast makes a city feel administratively real. Heraldic names take an emblem: the Silver Hand, the Crimson Chain, the Gilded Sparrow. Euphemistic names belong to guilds that cannot advertise honestly — thieves, assassins, smugglers — and work best when the name is aggressively mundane: the Ropewalk Society, the Fourth Ledger, Harbour Maintenance.
A thieves’ guild called the Shadow Daggers announces itself to every city watch in the region. One called the Coopers’ Benevolent Fund does not. The best criminal organisation names are indistinguishable from dull civic institutions, and players enjoy the reveal.
Guilds named for the street, gate or river where they formed — the Eastgate Consortium, Millrace Union — gain instant placement in a city map. Founder-named guilds (Vasca’s Hundred) imply a history and a possible schism.
Nobody says “the Worshipful Company of Dyers” in conversation. Members say “the Company,” rivals say “the Dyers,” and the watch says something ruder. Deciding the shorthand makes the guild feel used rather than invented.
