Real legendary swords are named the opposite way to these

Before the pool, the thing worth knowing. The famous named blades of actual myth — Excalibur, Durendal, Joyeuse, Tizona, Kusanagi, Gram — share one property: the name does not describe the sword. They are opaque proper nouns. Nothing in the sound of “Excalibur” tells you what it cuts, and that opacity is doing the work. The name has outlived the explanation, which is exactly what makes the weapon feel older than the story it appears in.

Every name in this pool does the reverse. All 20 are transparent: Dawnbringer brings dawn, Veilpiercer pierces veils, Serpent’s Fang looks like a fang. That is a different and equally valid effect — a transparent name reads as earned. Someone watched the blade do a thing and named it for that. An opaque name reads as inherited.

So the practical rule this page exists to give you: use this pool for a sword whose deeds your party witnessed, and invent an opaque proper noun for a sword older than your setting. Mixing the two registers in one campaign is what makes a magic-item list feel like it has history rather than a theme.

1. Agent names — the sword is named for what it does (8)

Dawnbringer · Stormreaver · Shadowseeker · Emberstrike · Astral Reaver · Lunar Slicer · Veilpiercer · Soulshatter Sword

Built on an action suffix: -bringer, -reaver, -seeker, -piercer, -slicer, -strike, -shatter. This is the largest group and the safest to hand a player character, because the name doubles as a hook: whoever named it had seen it do that. Dawnbringer is the strongest paladin-adjacent option here. Soulshatter Sword is the odd one out — it is the only name in the pool that appends the generic word “Sword” to a compound that already reads as a name, so drop the last word if you want it to sound less like a loot table entry.

2. Beast names — the sword is named for an animal’s weapon (4)

Serpent’s Fang · Wyrmfang · Phoenix Talon · Obsidian Thorn

The oldest trick in weapon naming, and the one that survives translation best. A fang, a talon and a thorn are all things that were sharp before anyone forged anything, so these names imply the blade is natural rather than made — useful for a druidic, fey or monstrous origin. Note that Serpent’s Fang uses the possessive and Wyrmfang fuses the words: the possessive suggests the sword was taken from the creature, the fused form suggests it merely resembles one. That is a free plot difference sitting in an apostrophe.

3. Named-object names — a descriptor plus a real blade type (8)

Whispering Blade of Eldoria · Frostfire Edge · Nightfall Scimitar · Celestial Cleaver · Vortex Edge · Bloodmoon Claymore · Runesong Sabre · Tempest’s Wrath

These name the weapon rather than its effect, and four of them commit to a specific real blade — a scimitar, a claymore, a sabre, a cleaver. That specificity is worth more than it looks: a claymore is a two-handed Scottish greatsword and a sabre is a curved cavalry blade, so Bloodmoon Claymore and Runesong Sabre quietly tell your table how the weapon is held before anyone reads a stat block. Check the blade type matches the character’s build before you commit — a finesse rogue holding a claymore is a joke the name is making at your expense. Whispering Blade of Eldoria is the only place-bound name in the pool, so it needs a setting called Eldoria or a quick find-and-replace.

How to pick one in under a minute

1. Decide who named it. The wielder or their companions → agent name. A culture that found it → beast name. A smith or an archive → named-object.
2. Check the blade type against the build. Only group 3 commits you to a shape; groups 1 and 2 fit any weapon on the sheet, including an axe or a spear if you swap nothing.
3. Say it in a sentence you would say at the table: “I draw Veilpiercer.” If it survives that, it survives a campaign.
4. Give it one line of history. A transparent name begs the question “who saw it do that?” — answering it in a sentence is the cheapest characterisation a magic item ever gets.
