Surface elves name their children for things they hope will be true. Dark elves name them for the room they will have to survive. In almost every setting that uses them, dark elf society runs on rank, surveillance and betrayal — so the name arrives before its owner speaks and does the social work: which house you belong to, how far up it you sit, and whether you are currently in favour.
That is the design brief, and it is why simply darkening an elven name rarely works. The generator below draws from a curated pool of 37 names built to that brief, set out on this page in the three registers dark elf naming actually splits into. No sign-up, no email, no limit on how often you press it.
Pool-verified — the exact names in the live generator, not examples invented for this article.
Zyrithra · Vaunra · Nyssaeth · Xariel · Threnza · Malvyth · Ssavryn · Ilvraeth · Quessith · Draeza · Yrzenna · Vhaelyss · Xelrizza · Zaressa
These belong to people who expect to be obeyed, and they are the longest names in the pool for a reason: length is a privilege. A name of three or four syllables takes time to say, and only someone who cannot be interrupted gets one. Zyrithra, Xelrizza and Yrzenna are the clearest cases — each forces the speaker to slow down.
Notice the vowels doing the opposite of surface-elf work. Where a high elf name opens out into -iel and -wen, these close down onto -yth, -eth, -ss and -ra: Nyssaeth, Malvyth, Ilvraeth, Quessith, Vhaelyss. The mouth finishes on a hiss or a stop rather than a sigh. That one substitution carries most of the difference in register, and it is the single change to make if you are converting a name you already like.
Ssavryn opens on a doubled sibilant, the pool’s strongest single marker — Ssythra, in the next group, is the only other name that uses it. Deploy that opening sparingly: the effect works because it is rare.
Also pool-verified. This is the working register: officers, weapon masters, house wizards — the people who carry out what the first group decides.
Ulvareth · Phyrenza · Mezzryth · Talvaeza · Ssythra · Verdrizz · Gorvaeth · Zarnith · Kelzavar · Phaerix · Drivzan · Molvruth
Shorter and blunter than the high-house names, several built on hard clusters that survive being shouted across a cavern: Gorvaeth, Zarnith, Drivzan, Molvruth. Kelzavar shows the pattern running through the group — a soft opening syllable followed by a hard one, so the name starts courteous and finishes as a threat. Phaerix is the outlier and the most useful name here for one particular character: the ph and the terminal x read scholarly rather than martial. It is the name for when the dangerous person in the room is the one holding a book.
Xantheth · Yrgoth · Vessaran · Thraliss · Nulzeth · Zhaeril · Grevaith · Ombrezz · Szaldrin · Vorlaeth · Kyrszeth
The last eleven, pool-verified. These carry the register without the polish: Yrgoth, Nulzeth, Ombrezz and Grevaith are harsher and less balanced than anything in the first group, and that is deliberate. A name that does not scan is a name from a lesser house, a border outpost, or nowhere at all.
This matters more than it looks, because a dark elf who gives you only a personal name is telling you something. Where the house name is the status marker, withholding it means exile, disgrace, or a deliberate lie. Thraliss or Vessaran offered with no house attached is a complete character introduction before anyone has described a face.
If you need the house itself, build it to sound older and more ceremonial than the person — House Ilvantar, House Duskvane, House Zesh-Marrow — and let standing show in whether a character is permitted to use it. The kingdom names list is a reasonable source of that register, and tribe names works for the smaller ones.
1. Darkening the meaning instead of the sound. A name that translates as Shadowbane or Nightsorrow states the mood rather than creating it. The register lives in phonology, not vocabulary — compare Aelwen with Vaelzin: the same rhythm, an entirely different implication, and not one dark word used.
2. Reaching for the apostrophe. It reads as effort rather than menace and makes the name harder to say. Every name in this pool holds the register without one.
3. Giving an exile a high-house name. If your fiction says the character was cast out, the name should not scan as smoothly as a matron’s. It is the cheapest characterisation available and almost nobody uses it.
Keep the flowing structure of an elven name but change the sound palette: swap open endings like -iel and -wen for closed ones like -yth, -eth, -ss and -ra, and lean on sibilants and the letters V, Z and X. The aim is elegance with something wrong underneath, not simply a harsher name.
Usually not. Punctuation is the most common substitute for craft in this register. Z’ha’ryth is harder to read and no more sinister than Zaharyth. Build the darkness into the sounds rather than the typography and the name will survive being spoken aloud at a table.
In most settings dark elf society is organised into competing noble houses, so the family name carries more status than the personal one. House names should sound older and more ceremonial than the individual’s. Whether a character may use theirs communicates their standing, and giving only a personal name usually signals exile or disgrace.
From a fixed pool of 37 names that a person wrote and checked, grouped into three registers: high-house, house-soldier and exile. The selection is random but the pool is curated, so every name has been read by a human before it reaches you.
Drow is one setting’s word for its dark elves and has become a general shorthand. The conventions on this page apply to either, since both descend from the same idea of a subterranean elven society organised around houses and rank.
Yes, with no attribution required, in personal or commercial work. The names in this pool are original constructions rather than characters from any published setting.
