Wizards are the one class whose name is a credential. Sorcerers are born with power and bards perform it, but a wizard studied, and studying leaves a paper trail: a given name from a family, and a second name that belongs to the profession. Almost every good wizard name is that pair.
The given name should be ordinary for the wizard’s culture. This is the part most people over-design. A wizard called Eldrin or Fendrel sounds like a person who later became a wizard, which is exactly what happened. The second name is where all the flavour goes.
There are three reliable sources for the second name. Earned — from a discovery, a disaster, or a duel: Arcbringer, Wyrmshadow. Occupational — naming the school or the work: Fatescribe, Silverquill, Moonweaver. Adopted — chosen on completing an apprenticeship, which is the most interesting option because the wizard picked it themselves and had to live with the choice: Eboncloak, Shadowmantle.
An adopted name that is faintly embarrassing is one of the best character details available to a wizard player. Somebody chose Eboncloak at twenty-two and has been introducing himself that way for forty years.
Wizards accumulate titles the way other classes accumulate scars, and the title is often what people actually use. Archmage. Magister. The Third Chair of Divination. A wizard who is introduced by title and never by name reads as genuinely powerful, and it costs one line to set up.
If your setting has a school or academy, decide what its graduates are entitled to call themselves — it gives every wizard NPC an instant, consistent naming convention, and it tells the party immediately who trained where.
Velandria, Mystral, Lunaria and Vesperis read feminine; Tirion, Elysian, Fendrel and Seraphel sit comfortably neutral. Because the surname carries the profession, the given name can be as neutral as you like without losing any of the wizardliness — Tirion Starwhisper reads exactly as scholarly regardless of who is carrying it.
Naming the wizard after their favourite spell. Fireball surnames age badly and lock the character to one school for the whole campaign.
Stacking two grand halves. Zyphoros Doomshadow is one grand element too many. Pair the elaborate half with something plain and the elaborate half lands harder.
